Notes and Editorial Reviews

2-Disc Set
The nobility and purity of his playing makes this disciple of Segovia worthy of cult status.

Alirio Diaz is one of the outstanding classical guitarists in the concert world, according to the judgment of critics in New York, Rome, Paris, London, Madrid, and Berlin. Born in 1923 at Carora, Venezuela, he studied music in Caracas and then continued at the Madrid Conservatory, where he received upon graduation the “Extraordinary Prize.” He then decided to study further with Andrés Segovia at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy. Eventually, Alirio Diaz toured Europe and the Americas, receiving critical cheers everywhere: “A remarkable virtuoso and a sensitive musician” (Acitivités

After the artist’s New York debut in 1959, American critics were equally enthusiastic. Jay S. Harrison wrote in the New York Herald Tribune “What distinguishes Mr. Diaz’s work is the nobility and purity of his playing, its highmindedness and utter lack of expressive pretense. Elevation of thought, as well, is present in every phrase he fashions.” Raymond Ericson wrote in the New York Times, “Mr. Diaz’s technical equipment is complete, so that interest was centered on his interpretations, which could not have been more fastidious musically.”
