Notes and Editorial Reviews

When singers are endowed with exceptionally beautiful voices, they often rely on that beauty to carry them along and fail to develop the proper technique to ensure their vocal longevity. These inadequately trained voices rarely can produce the varied dynamics, colors, and articulations that the music asks of them. Or the exceptionally beautiful voice belongs to a singer of mediocre dramatic and musical instincts, and the beauty of the voice strikes the listener as a wasted commodity. Riccardo Stracciari possessed not only a most uncommonly beautiful voice but also musical sensitivity, dramatic flair, and a flawless technique. The performances compiled here, recorded in 1917 and 1925, sound so immediate that the listener will forget the Read more distance that time and recording advances have wrought. Stracciari bathes "Di provenza il mar, il suol" in both a luxurious, plaintive tone and restrained, dramatic heft; Straccari's performance made even Toscanini shed a tear while conducting. In another Verdi role, that of Iago, Straccairi couples his dramatic instincts and his incomparable technique-consider the ringing high A's and faultless chromatic runs of the "Brindisi" or the absolute control of mezzo-voce and sotto-voce singing in "Era la notte"-to create the lasting template for this role.
