Notes and Editorial Reviews
"This is a delight, and not just for the works listed on the cover. Tucked inside is a superb recording of Mozart's ''Musical Joke,'' and a similar effervescent humor enlivens everything here.
It comes from a surprising source. Jordi Savall is a gambist, and the viola da gamba repertory tends more to the morose than to the jocular. What's more, humor has not been a hallmark of his brilliant work as a conductor, which in any case remains firmly rooted in the Baroque.
Yet he catches just the right spirit for Mozart's spoof of bad playing and worse composition. The players' dead-earnest rendering of trivial melodies, insipid harmonies and boneheaded modulations clearly reveals the source of so many of Peter Schickele's
inspirations for the music of P. D. Q. Bach. The ''Serenata Notturna'' (K. 239) proves just as entertaining... ''Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'' has nothing so blatant, but it bristles with life... This disc is ideal for Mozart novices as well as aficionados."
