Fine performances, strangely engineered February 28, 2016 By Christopher D. (Kokomo, IN) See All My Reviews "Ormandy has a fine feeling for this music, and the performances have sweep, color, good tempos, and beautiful playing. The early 70's recording is unnatural, though - sections are spotlit separately, right/left separation is extreme, and you don't get a sense of the full, rich sound the orchestra gave. (I was listening on headphones; this probably would sound better on speakers.) But Ormandy's conducting is superb and the price is a bargain." Report Abuse
Fine Recording, Despite Its Age April 8, 2015 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This is a collection of some of Johann Strauss II's most famous waltz compositions, compliments of the Philadelphia Orchestra and its great, long-serving music director Eugene Ormandy. The recording was made in the late 1960's, which means that the technical quality of the sound is not quite up to today's modern digital standards. Nevertheless, the famous Philadelphia sound comes through loud and clear on this re-mastered RCA disk. Strings are lush and deep, wind and brass are exemplary- these are the trademarks which have made and sustained the PO's reputation through thick and thin over many years. Maestro Ormandy chooses a measured, relaxed tempo for most of the program, not hurrying anything or engaging in explosive histrionics. The result is a thoroughly enjoyable program of music from Vienna's golden era, which should come across just fine on all but the most audiophile of sound systems. It definitely merits a listen."
