Big Boned Mozart September 22, 2015 By J. Morrow (Atlanta, GA) See All My Reviews "I am a big fan of Colin Davis' recordings of choral works by Mozart. So when I decided to fill this hole in my collection (I had no recordings of any Mozart symphonies.) I went looking a Mozart set similar to Davis' Phillips recordings of the late Haydn symphonies. Unable to find an equivalent I started looking around for reviews that might point me in the right direction. Karl Bolhm got high marks in several reviews, but upon listening to some online samples i found the sound to be icy and the articulation rather stiff. If you are looking for the texturally thin and reedy sound of original instruments, look elsewhere. I looked into Barenboim when i realized that these Mozart recordings were done with the same ensemble (English Chamber Orchestra) that he used to record the JS Bach Violin Concertos with Itzhak Perlman. The ensemble is fluid, the sound warm, the tempo swift, the key major,… Yum!" Report Abuse
