 Excellent, But What Orchestra Made This Recording? November 22, 2012 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Chandos' famous sonic brilliance is on full display in this superb program of Russian dances, which are mostly excerpted from operas and ballets. Selections by Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov, Prokofiev, Khachaturian, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky make up this re-issue, which was originally recorded in the 1980's. Neeme Jarvi's excellent direction is easily recognizable in the program's wide variety of moods, tempos, and atmospherics, ranging from the fire of Khachaturian's Gayaneh to the gentle inntrospection of Prokofiev's Pushkin Waltzes. This disk provides compelling musical evidence of the Russian genius for integrating gloriously melodic content into the demands of ballet and operatic scores. I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this wonderful high energy recording. Highly recommended! Only one question: which orchestra recorded this program, the London Philharmonic Orchestra or the Royal Scottish National Orchestra? The CD booklet identifies both orchestras. What gives?"
