| The vast output of Francesco Landini, the best-known Florentine composer of his time, represents around a quarter of the total secular music of the Italian Ars Nova that is still extant today in the various manuscript sources. Here is presented a tenth of the extant output of Francesco Landini. It is not so much a selection of his finest works - since most of his compositions are assuredly of a high standard - as a representative anthology of the salient characteristics of his art. Landini here pays his debts to French culture by choosing the form of the multitexted motet, thus as it were encrypting the intelligibility of the words, and using the various imitative and isorhythmic devices typical of French polyphony even in its earliest forms. This is clearly a style designed for solo voices, intended to bring out the strength and cohesion of the intertwined parts and the melismatic fluidity of the two superius lines. | |||||
