Notes and Editorial Reviews

Seemingly inexhaustible pianist Leslie Howard presents here his sixth two-disc volume in the 'Liszt at the Opera' sub-series of his complete recordings of Franz Liszt's piano music, Volume 54 of the overall series. Following the well-known operatic fantasies, paraphrases, and transcriptions (and some lesser-known ones), Howard has come to first and second versions of works already available in the earlier sets. Most are presented in performing scores prepared by him from manuscript copies, and eight of the ten are recorded for the first time.
As always, Howard's playing sparkles, even as he nears the end of the project after more than ten years of recording and studying Liszt's music. Although instrumental versions of stage music were
Read more quite common in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was Liszt who raised them to the level of virtuoso works. Without exception, his compositions based on operas are electrifying, whether in their final versions or before his revisions. Hyperion's sound is excellent as usual, allowing Howard's performances ample clarity and dynamic breadth. Read less
