Notes and Editorial Reviews

Conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier may conduct the B.B.C. Philharmonic Orchestra, but his heart is still back in France. This collection of 19th Century French music is a good example of why Tortelier is still so connected with his home.
Popular classics such as Charles Gounod's 'Marche funèbre d'une marionnette' and other familiar works by composers such as Massenet and Offenbach are featured prominently. Tortelier leads the orchestra in a celebration of this music, evoking sweet romance in every piece. Auber's rousing overture to 'Le cheval de bronze' rings with revelry as does the album as a whole. Tortelier and the B.B.C. Philharmonic's salute to French music is a successful introduction to the nation's cultural wealth.
