Notes and Editorial Reviews

Here is Fauré sumptuously caught in a spectrum of exquisiteness hovering from delicate to gorgeous—captured in gratifyingly transparent, immediate sound—which establishes Stott as the absolute paragon of what might be called the Prozac approach—no highs, no lows, sleek surfaces— favored by pianists who've essayed him in the last decade or so, e.g., David Lively (Etcetera KTC 1082, Fanfare 14:1) and Stéphane Lemelin (CBC Musica Viva MVCD 1075, Fanfare 18:3) in the Nocturnes, Pascal Rogé in an attractive selection of early pieces (London 425 606-2, Fanfare 17:2), and Stott herself in two previous collections (reissued together as Conifer 75605 51751 2, see Fanfare 10:5 and 12:6). In fact, everything here is so dulcetly, Read more beautifully played that one feels churlish in calling attention to how the homogenizing danger of the intégral dovetails with the misapprehension that Fauré's urbane manner is the message, thus masking in mellifluous ennui his astonishing range—to which Bryce Morrison's excellent annotations are a surer guide than much of what's on these discs. Following in score, one sees Fauré's frequent indications met, including Crescendos—yet as Stott takes them their effect is all too often suavened to a curious anticlimax: Fauré may evade or postpone harmonic resolution, but he does resolve—where Stott often fails to. In the upshot, the Barcarolles or the Nocturnes, heard one after the other, tend to shade into a not unpleasant tedium absent from, say, the early-70s traversais of Jean-Philippe Collard and the vastly underrated Jean Doyen, neither of whom play with anything like Stott's sensuous consistency. Indeed, as one goes back to the divinatory interpreters of Fauré—Doyen, Robert Casadesus, Yvonne Lefébure (FY FYCD 088, Fanfare 13:2)—one hears a lighter touch, less pedal, mercurially deft passagework, greater shapeliness, rhythmic primness, and a more inflected, far more emotionally direct utterance. Erato silvered the Doyen intégral for the European market a while ago, though that's said to have gone out of print: a reissue for the North American market would be not only an appropriate gesture for this 150th anniversary of Fauré's birth, but a needful corrective to the languid impasto which latter-day pianists read into him. Meanwhile, however, the present album is such a tour de force—and probably, as well, a ne plus ultra—of that reading that it not only commands respect but affords considerable pleasure. And on those terms it is recommended.
