Notes and Editorial Reviews

This new collection by Yolanda Kondonassis was compiled "with the singular purpose of creating a consistently serene listening experience", evoking a peaceful, meditative state. It doesn't take long into this disc to realize that Kondanassis has handsomely succeeded in her aim. Carlos Salzedo's Introspection gently floats you away on impressionistic waves, and you soon find yourself feeling "completely at rest, free and open." Salzedo was a world-renowned master harpist in the early-to-mid 20th century who expanded the harp's tonal palette through his innovations to the instrument's design. Two other Salzedo works, Quietude and Préludes Intimes, fully exploit the harp's
Read more expressive and coloristic potential.

Of the transcriptions that make up the remainder of this album, Debussy's Rêverie and Sarabande make the most natural sounding conversions, while Satie's Gnossiennes take on an even more isolated quality. Respighi's Notturno exemplifies the nocturnal dreaminess implied by the term. Beautiful as it is, Mendelssohn's Meditation seems a bit foursquare in this esoteric company, but Chopin's C minor Prelude is right at home, sounding here like a summons from another realm. Sibelius is a composer who certainly could have written for the harp, and his Berceuse tantalizingly hints at the possibilities of his unique harmonic language applied to this miraculous instrument. Miraculous too is Kondonassis' playing, which has been captured with superior fidelity by Telarc's sparkling DSD recording. If you've never even considered a harp record, this one's a great place to start.
