Notes and Editorial Reviews

This ostensibly odd mélange has a greater degree of unity than might at first be apparent. The key is improvisation, taking as its starting point the Folia, the bass pattern of which became the foundation of countless quasi-improvisational compositions during the Baroque era. Such a format is not of course original—Jordi Savall’s “La Folia” (23:5) is just the best known of several previous CDs that have gone down a similar route—but the present disc seems to me to have several advantages. One is simply that the Folia pattern used for variation runs the danger of becoming annoyingly ubiquitous when heard for the umpteenth time, a risk avoided here by the inclusion of pieces that have nothing to do with it. Secondly, the composition of Read more Teatro Lirico, which here includes violin (Milos Valent), Spanish and Italian harps (Maxine Eilander), viola da gamba and lirone (Erin Headley), and director Stephen Stubbs, implies and delivers performances dominated by lyricism and subtlety of approach rather than exuberance. This is clearly apparent in the two extended sets of improvisations on the Folia, where the ear is constantly engaged and beguiled by a magical sound world in which any kind of dynamic outburst is consistently thwarted by retreat.

The suite culled from Pestr´y zbornik—an anonymous Slovak manuscript in tablature (the booklet contains an illustration of a couple of pages) dating from the last quarter of the 17th century—is the most exotic rarity on offer. Seven extracts are played, the first four of which are taken from publications by the Dresden composer Caspar Horn (c. 1630–c. 1685), appealing pieces that make use of burlesque elements. The other three appear to be anonymous local pieces of folk-like character, the first, featuring tolling bells and hauntingly lovely modal melody, being played with a superb feel for the style by Valent, a violinist trained in both classical and folk styles. Throughout, indeed, his playing, burnished with a slightly bronzed huskiness in the middle and lower registers, provides one of the great pleasures of the disc.

The Italian pieces, which include unusually free interpretations of the Corelli movements—op. 5/12 coming from his “Folia” Sonata, of course—are also very successful. It would be interesting to know the provenance of the arrangement of Caccini’s popular Amarilli, which includes embellishments at times reminiscent of those Monteverdi provided for “Possenti spirto” in Orfeo, a reminder of the dependence of instrumental music on vocal models at this period. Moves toward an idiomatic instrumental (specifically violin) style are clearly apparent in the sonata by the Dresden Kapellmeister Carlo Farina (c. 1600–c. 1640), which typically for the period juxtaposes cantabile lyricism and dance rhythms within a frame of patchwork.

The performances are beautifully judged and balanced, while also exuding a sense of sheer sensual pleasure in the colors and sonorities available to the ensemble. The engineering is superb, capturing every last wisp of sound with the utmost fidelity. If this sounds like your kind of CD, don’t hesitate.

EXCEPTIONAL August 13, 2014 By D. Bell (San Diego, CA) See All My Reviews "Hauntingly beautiful music and an imaginative program. The Adagio by Cazzati (whose dates coincide perfectly with one of my favorite English masters Matthew Locke -- 1621/2 - 1677, one of Purcell's teachers) won't leave my head. (And I'm grateful.)"
