The great Leopold Stokowski enjoyed a long career that saw him lead the great orchestras of the world. In 1912 he assumed the leadership of the Philadelphia Orchestra and shaped it into one of the finest orchestras in all of music. Most of all, the Stokowski legacy was established with the many recordings he made over the course of his long and glorious career. This recording of music by Wagner and Beethoven offers an opportunity to hear Stokowski leading the London Symphony Orchestra in a 1967 concert appearance. The depth of passion and youthful vigor that Stokowski, then aged eighty-five, brings to a suite of music from Wagner's 'Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg' is nothing short of miraculous. The exuberant "Dance of the Apprentices" is suitably festive and the "Entrance of the Meistersingers" grand. The remainder of the recording focuses on a poetic reading of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Stokowski leads a grand performance that offers a ferocious Scherzo and an epic choral finale. This is an essential document of one of the great conductors in the history of music. |
