Notes and Editorial Reviews

The concertos included in Enrico Onofri’s collection for Naïve constitute the first volume of Vivaldi’s violin concertos in the Tesori del Piemonte series; the booklet lists the release as Volume 30 in that series, but the jewel box identifies it as Volume 29. Two of the concertos, RV 208 and RV 234, appear in Viktoria Mullova’s collection on Onyx 4001, with Il Giardino Armonico, an ensemble with which Onofri has also been associated. Whereas Il Giardino Armonico begins the “Grosso mogul” with bow strokes resembling crackling gunshots, the Academia Montis Regalis produces more insinuating, less percussive sonorities. But Onofri’s boldly slashing entrance commands greater attention—and holds it, despite his frequently whining tone Read more production—through the recitative-like slow movement with its swirling figuration and the finale’s stunning cadenza (there’s one in the first movement as well). The Concerto, RV 332, published in Vivaldi’s op. 8, bears a similarity to the others in Naïve’s collection due to its cadenza-like figuration and its recitative-like slow movement. Onofri makes the most of its virtuosic possibilities. The Concerto, RV 234, “L’Inquietudine,” however, makes an even more stunning impression with its tumultuous opening and its lightning-like solo part. Olivier Fourès’s booklet notes (Onofri also contributed an essay) suggest that the three concertos, “L’Inquietudine,” “Il sospetto,” and “Il riposo,” constitute a sort of whole. Be that as it may, they share arpeggiated staccato figuration that’s meat and potatoes to Onofri and the ensemble. Onofri suggested a detailed program for “La caccia”; the gossamer textures (with strings muted in the first movement and the addition of ethereal wind sonorities) in all three movements of “Il riposo” provide the strongest contrast to its hunting calls and gunshots: it’s like an interlude with an otherworldly Aeolian harp after a vigorous hunt.

The recorded sound, reverberant and a bit tubby, nevertheless communicates the crackling rhythms with which Onofri and the ensemble drive these pieces forward. For their rhythmic verve and the virtuosity of their solo parts, Onofri and the ensemble’s performances, in the percussive manner of ensembles like Il Giardino Armonico and The Venice Baroque Orchestra, deserve a similarly tub-thumping recommendation.
