Notes and Editorial Reviews

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, director Michael Hampe and conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti, in connection with the Schwetzingen Festival, staged the four farsa’s ( Il signor Bruschino, L’occasione fa il ladro, La cambiale di matrimonio, and La scala di seta) at the intimate Rococo theater. Fortunately for Rossini-lovers, these absolutely wonderful productions were videotaped.

They are unpretentious stagings with beautiful, elaborate, realistic sets, extravagantly costumed, loaded with witty

* Rossini’s first staged opera already contains all the elements that would take the music world by storm in Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’italiana in Algeri and La Cenerentola in the years to come: melodic inventiveness, ingenious connections between sung lines and orchestral accompaniment in the exuberant finale, musical humour and ensembles using breathtakingly fast parlando singing.
* This sparkling production continues the Rossini one-act opera series emerging from the Schwetzingen Festival with excellent direction, acting and stagecraft.
* It was realised to perfection in the small, jewel-like Rococo Theatre of Schwetzingen Palace. The stage is small and the production transfers to the small screen perfectly.

Magically Entertaining July 9, 2012 By William H. (Courtenay , BC) See All My Reviews "Rossini's "La cambiale di matrimonio" is a gem of a farsa opera, Rossini's first and in my opinion one of the best things he ever wrote. The music is scintilating, the singing gorgeous and the singers are all topnotch. The sets too are perfect in every way. This one act opera is only 82 minutes long but I wish it had been twice that length it is so good.Bel Canto singers Feller and Kuebler are superb aided by Del Carlo who can act as well as sing.Alberto Rinaldi as the so called Canadian "Slook" arrives in a bearskin coat with a rifle and sidearm and gives a hilarious performance. You cant beat this little gem of an opera, one that I watch at least once a month just to give me a lift. Simply great. " Report Abuse
