Notes and Editorial Reviews

A striking feature of the tenth volume of this series of Bach's cantatas is the formal fluidity of the works. Although most cantatas open and close with a chorus, with recitatives, arias and duets between, several begin with only a duet (BWV 44) or even a recitative (BWV 134 and 134a). This only reinforces the dictum that we need not lament the omission of opera from Bach's compositions, for we can experience his capacity for dramatic expression in his formal responses to the cantatas' specific occasional and textual requirements.
Another welcome feature is the inclusion of two cantatas in which Bach re-uses musical selections from one work (BWV 134a, a secular serenata from 1719) within another (BWV 134, a cantata for the Tuesday after

The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Chorus are led authoritatively by Ton Koopman. The vocal soloists perform with an exceptional degree of subtlety, and Marion Verbruggen's rendition of the obbligato recorder part in the BWV 119 aria "Authority is given by God" is divinely lyrical and effective.
