Notes and Editorial Reviews

The remarkable Sergey Taneyev, active as composer, pianist, teacher, scientist and public figure, embodied the traditions of Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Bach and Beethoven. One of his greatest ideas in music was the creation of a ěRussian polyphony;î the need for Russian music to live through a stage of contrapuntal development. He reconsidered his approach to several of the most popular genres of Russian music (chamber compositions, lyrical-philosophical cantatas). The fugue was of special importance in his creative work. With his Quartets, Taneyev's inventiveness reached new heights. This was the area where the strongest aspects of the composerís artistic individuality; his noble spirituality, sincerity and purity of lyrical emotion, subtle and Read more profound intellectual culture, showed itself with the utmost perfection. In the history of Russian chamber music, these are probably the most important works of their kind until the first Quartets of Shostakovich composed decades later. Read less
