Notes and Editorial Reviews

In each of these three sonatas, written at different periods, Beethoven offers a new solution to the question of form in the sonata, that 'mould' which had become established by his time as the standard structure for musical works. In general such a composition would be in three or four movements: the first one fast, the second slow, and the final a rapid movement. The outcome of Beethoven's approach is that none of these three Sonatas in fact conform to the 'model' which he constantly reinterpreted to his expressive requirements. Gifted with a fabulous technique, the pianist Nicholas Angelich has now achieved an overwhelming purity of sound that indisputably sets him among today's finest artists.
