Notes and Editorial Reviews

Eric Ericson, cond; Eric Ericson CCh; Drottningholm Baroque Ens (period instruments) ? EMI 41410 (64:46)

Here is yet another worthy set of Bach?s Motets?the canonical six (as indicated in the headnote), though EMI?s brief notes do admit the Read more possibility that Lobet den Herrn may not be authentic?sung in BWV order. The notes also state that Bach ?broke with convention by providing an accompaniment for strings and woodwind? in writing his motets, which are sung here with colla parte (instruments doubling voices) accompaniment. Curiously, as recently as 50 years ago, scholarly opinion was quite the opposite, and the motets were usually sung a cappella . But accompanied performances now prevail. Since Bach?s motets never went out of the active repertoire, it?s hard to understand how the conventional wisdom turned completely around.

There is a mysterious oddity about this disc. An idiosyncratic rhythmic treatment of the words ?Ich stärke dich? in the fourth motet, Fürchte dich nicht , is exactly the same rhythmic anomaly that cropped up in Harnoncourt?s recording of the motets for Teldec. Harnoncourt?s version was sung by the Bachchor Stockholm. The Eric Ericson Chamber Choir was originally named the Stockholm Chamber Choir. Now we are getting somewhere, and that place apparently fronts on the Baltic Sea. EMI?s notes further reveal that one of the distinguished conductors with whom Ericson has collaborated is none other than Maestro Harnoncourt. All that remains is to determine whether this is a Swedish thing or a Harnoncourt thing. But I doubt that we?ll ever definitively find out, and your guess is as good as mine.

The aforementioned hitch is probably the only noticeable flaw in either Ericson?s or Harnoncourt?s motet albums. And it is serious only to the extent that it bothers you. Obviously, it?s gotten to me, else I wouldn?t have devoted so much space to it. I might not have noticed it at all in a concert performance, but I?ll be acutely aware whenever I play the recording. But if it doesn?t bother you, and it may not, this is a fine recording of the motets. If you think it might, try Marlow?s motets on Conifer, Kuijken?s on Accent, or Herreweghe?s on Harmonia Mundi. No texts or translations are provided.
