Notes and Editorial Reviews

The art of transcription dates back several centuries. Prominent among 20th century transcribers are Godowsky, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Grainger and, in particular, Ferruccio Busoni. This recording presents the late, great John Ogdon's selection from the Bach transcriptions with which Busoni's name is still most widely associated. In Ogdon's words, ìThe Bach-Busoni Chaconne deservedly remains one of the best-loved keyboard works in this form. In Busoni's transcription, he shows consummate mastery of a form to which, as an original composer, he returns in the opera Doktor Faust and in the thematically related Toccata composed towards the end of his life. The Fantasia contrappuntistica is unique in Busoni's output and represents a watershed in the Read more history of keyboard polyphony. This disc represents the first release of Ogdon's second and last recording of this work. To this day, the Fantasia is still considered a great challenge and has had few authoritative champions. The chance to hear this monumental performance allows us to equally revere Busoni's unique concept and the art of John Ogdon. Read less
