Notes and Editorial Reviews

BEETHOVEN Mass in C Fabio Luisi, cond; Middle German RSO & Ch; Christiane Oelze (sop); Claudia Mahnke (mez); Christian Elsner (ten); Franz-Josef Selig (bs) QUERSTAND 0522 (44:48)

One might well argue that this work, a product of Beethoven’s wondrously rich middle period, is his most unjustly neglected score. Despite having gained a reasonable if not especially large number of recordings, it still remains unfamiliar to many of the composer’s staunchest admirers. It deserves better, fitting perfectly in Read more style and length between the glorious masses that crown Haydn’s career and the two composed by Schubert that cap his achievements. In most respects, this latest recording is most welcome. Free of an overly pious approach that weakened the account led by George Guest (Belart) and offering slightly better focused sound than that of the admirable reading led by John Eliot Gardiner (DG Archiv), it boasts a wide parameter of tempos that convey Beethoven’s sensitivity to the emotional implications of the text. Note in particular the aptly tortured Crucifixus and eruptive Resurexit. The soloists are all fine, as is the chorus. At times, the latter sounds just a bit too woolly in tone, but never to the point of being bothersome. Played at full volume, the sound is impressive for its presence and wide dynamic range. The major problem with this release, however, is that at its (presumably) full price, it offers far too little music. If this is not a deterrent, it can be warmly recommended.
