Notes and Editorial Reviews

Here is the beginning of a significant series devoted to the String Quartets of Sergey Taneyev. Born in 1856, he entered the Moscow Conservatory in 1866 and later graduated from the classes of Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein. From 1878 to 1905 he taught at the Conservatory himself. Among his pupils were Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Medtner and Gliere. His works include four Symphonies, various cantatas for voices and orchestra (particularly St. John of Damascus), concerti and over 60 songs for voice and piano. The most important part of Taneyevís output was his chamber music, with 22 works to his credit. Of his String Quartets, six are numbered and date from 1890 through 1903. There is an incomplete Quartet from 1911, and three early unnumbered ones Read more from his youth. The two performed in this first volume are rich in Romantic fervor and invention, reflecting the influence of Tchaikovsky in No. 1 but revealing a more personal voice in No. 4, which reflects a step forward over his earlier works in this genre. During the many decades since its first performance in 1946, the Taneyev String Quartet has been considered one of the greatest ensembles in Russia, renowned for its live performances and classic recordings of the Quartet repertoire.
