DELECTATIO ANGELI ? Catherine Bott (sop); Pavlo Beznosium, Mark Levy (fiddles) ? HYPERION CDA 67549 (62:26 & )

Music of BEDYNGHAM, BERNART DE VENTADORN, VAILLANT, ETIENNE DE MEAUX, LANDINI, CICONIA, DUFAY, MATHEUS DE PERUSIO, ANON

This collection, subtitled ?Music of love, longing, & lament,? includes some of the greatest hits of the named composers. Even under ?Anon.? we find the four Read more familiar laments from the Codex Las Huelgas, and Bedyngham is rightly credited with the familiar ?O rosa bella,? long attributed to Dufay. The single most familiar works of Bernart, Vaillant, Ciconia, and Dufay are included, namely ?Can vei la lauzeta mover,? ?Par maintes foys,? ?Una panthera,? and ?Vergine bella? respectively. But this is not just a greatest-hits collection of the late Middle Ages, for it begins with an unaccompanied Early Middle English prisoner?s song, ?Ar ne kuth ich sorghe non.? I?d never heard this haunting tune before, for a previous recording accompanied on the harp never came to me, and anyway where in a dungeon would a harp be found?

A story lies behind the Las Huelgas laments, in which the first, ?Plange Castella,? is unaccompanied, the rest sung with improvised playing and extensive interludes (the first take of the recording session is the one heard here). The three have performed together since their first festival appearance in Spain, where they unexpectedly found that posters billed them as ?Catherine Bott and Friends.? The name stuck. This program is a survey of their favorite pieces for voice and two fiddles. We had to wait five years for its release. Believe me, it was worth the wait. Hear this haunting music.
