Notes and Editorial Reviews

This somewhat randomly assembled collection includes two novelties well worth having if you haven't heard them: the Karelia Suite with its central ballade in its original vocal setting, and the rare tone poem The Wood-Nymph (due for publication this year, finally!). It's a little puzzling what the Violin Concerto, a good performance nonetheless, is doing among what otherwise is a collection of tone poems and short orchestral works. And there also are better versions available of individual items: Vänskä just barely mistimes the big wave in The Oceanides, while the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, for all the excellence of its playing and understanding of the idiom, lacks the sheer heft in the strings to put across the powerful climaxes Read more of Tapiola and En Saga with maximum impact. Still, these are fundamentally very good interpretations, fully in keeping with the high standards of the Lahti/Vänskä series, and for the most part outstandingly well-recorded. So if this assortment of pieces fills a gap in your collection, there's no reason to hesitate.
