Notes and Editorial Reviews

J. STRAUSS II Emperor Waltz. Tales from the Vienna Woods. Artist?s Life. North Sea Pictures. On the Beautiful Blue Danube. Roses from the South ? Yakov Kreizberg; cond; Vienna SO ? PENTATONE PTC 5186 052 (Hybrid multichannel SACD: 63:24)

PentaTone?s new disc, though less arresting than the Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony disc reviewed elsewhere, has much to commend it. It has become almost automatic that programs of Viennese concert waltzes should feature several composers, if only members of the Strauss dynasty, Read more and for further variety should intermix polkas, operetta arias, or marches. Having a disc entirely devoted to six of the best concert waltzes by the Waltz King himself, while not necessarily better, is a pleasant alternative. That is especially true when all the pieces are played as conscientiously and stylishly as is the case here. The recording also profits from the adroit use of multichannel, high-definition sound; not that this is a disc for demonstrating how high or low your sound system can go in audible (or inaudible) frequencies, or how it can ?thunder and lighten? at high levels. The sound is eminently natural, drawing one?s attention to the music rather than to the sound system.

Three waltzes are common to Reiner?s and Kreizberg?s discs: Emperor Waltz , Roses from the South , and the inevitable Blue Danube . In each case, Kreizberg takes substantially more time than Reiner. This is partly a matter of more relaxed tempos. But in the Emperor Waltz , Kreizberg conducts a longer score, most notable for a long, quiet, and tender episode near the end that you won?t hear in Reiner?s performance. Longest of all is a 13-minute Tales from the Vienna Woods , featuring atmospheric zither-playing by Wilfried Scharf. One should also commend Kreuzberg for including the lovely North Sea Pictures , still something of a rarity on discs. PentaTone supplies useful notes on the music, the Vienna Symphony (Wiener Symphoniker), and Russian-born, American-trained, and European-employed Yakov Kreizberg, its principal guest conductor. Warmly, not lukewarmly, recommended.
