Notes and Editorial Reviews

HAYDN The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross ? Frieder Bernius, cond; Stuttgart C Ch; Württembergisches CO Heilbronn; Inga Nilsen (sop); Gabriele Schreckenbach (alt); Martyn Hill (ten); Matthias Hölle (bs) ? PROFIL PH 05050 (58:23 & )

The Profil label has recently given us reissues from several defunct labels. This was Intercord INT 860950 (9:1), one of many Haydn works that Bernius recorded, along with great gobs of other Baroque and Classic Read more choral works. I originally found it inferior to János Ferencsik's interpretation on Hungaroton LPs and confirmed that reaction when the latter soon appeared on CD (9:4). But even though this CD sounds identical to the original, it can be enjoyed on its own terms as an effective presentation of the work. The soloists and ensembles are more than competent, the tempos are moderate (Ferencsik was slower, others were faster), and the sound was captured effectively in a church in Ludwigsburg, Bernius's birthplace. The much-recorded work (in all four of its versions) remains immensely consoling music.
