Notes and Editorial Reviews

"There is greater variety than might be supposed in these psalms and motets. In many the choir is divided or otherwise disposed in different proportions, and the recording makes the most of this spatial element composed into the music. Psalm No. 2 (Why do the heathen rage, to us) comes off admirably here, with elegant and fluent singing, despite one or two unauthorized and unnecessary rallentandos by the conductor. The Nunc dimittis is a skillful piece of work, with great smoothness of line and atmosphere contrived by expert use of canonic imitation, and no doubt crusty old Zelter was pleased with his pupil; nevertheless, the effect is a little bland for a setting of a canticle that had stirred the imagination of so many composers in Read more so many different ways. The antiphonal Mitten st'ir is excellently done, and here too the recording excellently matches the music's disposition."
