Apart from his ever-popular Háry János Suite, very little of Kodály's orchestral music gets much attention these days. I'm particularly pleased, therefore, that Yan Pascal Tortelier has chosen to include on this program the rarely heard Concerto for Orchestra and the Symphony, two charming and light-hearted works that offer at least as much listening pleasure as the folksong-based suites of dances or the "Peacock" Variations. Competition in these two pieces is minimal: basically, it's Antal Dorati and the Philharmonia Hungarica on Decca, and Tortelier's performances are not only every bit as fine, they are superbly recorded as well (though Dorati has the price advantage). dazzling playing at very swift tempos, and I can't imagine anyone who enjoys colorful, vivacious neo-classical music not snapping up this issue.
