Notes and Editorial Reviews

The four Horn Concertos by Mozart were written for the virtuoso Ignaz Leutgeb, once a member of the Salzburg Orchestra. Leutgeb was no doubt a very obliging soul since he was the target of Mozart's relentless practical joking. For example, the score of the K.495 concerto was written in multicolored inks. Of course any soloist worth his while would be grateful for a concerto composed by Mozart and these are among his very best. The works are in three movements, except for the two movement K. 412. Each concerto displays Mozart at the top of his form. They are characterized by jaunty opening movements, song-like slow middle movements and rollicking rondo finales.
This recording is one in a series called "Great Recordings of the
Read more Century." No hyperbole here, soloist Dennis Brain, The Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Herbert von Karajan turn in performances that are unsurpassable. Brain was the great horn player of his day and his renditions of these works have become the yardstick by which all others are measured. His tragic death in an automobile accident in 1957 robbed the world of a great talent but this recording is a lasting tribute to his greatness. Read less
