Notes and Editorial Reviews

Subtitled ‘The Works for Organ’, Bowyer and Nimbus have extended this remit slightly to include some other keyboard works which have developed a performance history associated with the organ.

This pair of discs, recorded in 1998 and 1994 respectively, are designed as complete recital programmes in their own right. The first disc opens with one of Bach’s best-known organ Preludes and Fugues, that in E minor, BWV548, in a hard-driven, heftily-registered and over-hasty performance which sets the tone for the other example of the genre, the Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV546, which rounds things off. The other major work on this disc is the set of Canonic variations on Vom Himmel hoch, where Bowyer’s approach is more delicate,
Read more thereby allowing the music to speak clearly and without undue pressure. The only non-organ piece on this disc is the attractive Fantasia and Fugue in A minor, BWV904, which is normally associated with the harpsichord. It works well and, together with the Trio in D minor, BWV583, makes a pleasant foil to the other shorter pieces, all of which are chorale-based works.

The second disc consists of rarer fare, mostly chorale preludes, which have been framed by two harpsichord toccatas. There are two spurious works, the Fuga super Wir glauben all an einen Gott and the concerto-like Nun lobe meine Seele den Herrn. No such doubts exist about the eight chorales taken from the Neumeister Collection which range in emotion from innocent piety to extrovert rhetoric.

The organo pleno can become tiring on the ear in extended movements but the Marcussen’s colours are fully explored in the shorter and more intimate pieces. Recording quality is first-rate and the nine pages of notes (by Bowyer himself) are a model of lucidity and informed scholarship. A most enjoyable experience awaits the listener.
