Biddulph has diligently presented the unique art of Joseph Szigeti in recent releases, and this Brahms disc will have even further appeal to those who appreciate the great performers of the past. The participation of pianists Mieczyslaw Horszowski and Myra Hess, violinist Milton Katims (best known as a former conductor of the Seattle Symphony) and cellist Paul Tortelier makes this an ìall-starî recital indeed. Szigeti recorded all three of the Brahms Sonatas with Horszowski over a decadeís time (Sonatas 1 and 2 for Columbia, and the Third in stereo for Mercury). This recording of the Quartet was done at the famous Casals Festival in Prades during the summer of 1952. Myra Hess and Szigeti had first played together some 40 years earlier while Read more the violinist was still in his teens in London.
