Notes and Editorial Reviews

Georges Prêtre is far more inspired here than on his commercial EMI recording, the Rome Opera forces responding to all his mercurial demands. An almost ideal cast adds to our enjoyment. Nicolai Gedda’s understanding of French style has always been a marvel, and he is here matched by the urbanity of Roger Soyer’s Mephisto. Marilyn Horne is surprise casting as Marguerite, but turns in one of the best performances of the role on disc.
