MUSIC FROM THE WELSH MINES
Rhos Male Voice Choir

Welsh National Anthem.
Ar Doriad Dydd.
I will not take a great deal of
space for this disc, largely because it does not give very generously of itself, with just a bit more than a half hour of music. The accompanying notes gush over the work ethic of the choir, but tell us little about it and less about the music, though the oddly named Moochin’ About company does give us texts and translations. In fact, I would not have bothered to review it at all except for the wonderful singing of this choir of singing miners from Wales.
The dark sound, founded on an extremely solid bass line, is married to a quite unusual sense of blend and balance, providing great beauty throughout. Most of the music is slow and solemn, but there is enough variety to keep your interest. There is no doubting the deep feeling that these singers have for the material, and despite my initial frustration with this product for its short length and inadequate documentation I found myself almost hypnotized by its beauty. The perfectly judged recorded sound, spacious but also clear and focused, is another asset.
