Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The singing is of amazingly high quality.. Orgonasova is simply wonderful - vibrant, girlish, fluid, singing off the text and with no problem with the role's sometimes outlandish upper reaches....I can't imagine a finer current exponent of the role. Gimenez is equally good, his tone sweet, his high notes limpid, his passion undeniable...And so we finally have a Sonnambula one needn't apologize for - what a relief!" - FANFARE "The singing is of amazingly high quality..  Outstanding Recording! October 5, 2013 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Here is one of the real gems in Naxos' noteworthy series of opera recordings. Vincenzo Bellini's La Somnnambula (The Sleepwalker) is a work packed with magnificent singing in the form of arias, duets, and fabulous choruses. In this Naxos release, the Netherlands Radio Choir performs near miracles in support of the outstanding cast, which delivers a stirring, dynamic performance of Bellini's thoroughly enjoyable libretto, centering on romantic rivalries in a small, rustic (presumably Italian) setting. Particularly noteworthy is the magnificent voice of soprano Luba Orgonosova as Amina, a role in which she demonstrates spectacular dynamic range and emotional expression. Ably supported by bass Francesco d'Artegna as Count Rodolfo, mezzo Alexandra Papadjiakou as Teresa, soprano Dilber as Lisa, and tenor Raul Gimenez as Elvino in the other principal roles (plus the singers in the supporting roles), Orgonosova shines brilliantly in the center of romantic attention and controversy. This 1992 recording is a live performance from Amsterdam's famous Concertgebouw concert hall before a large and ecstatically appreciative audience. Naxos' engineering is top notch, resulting in a recording of near audiophile demonstration quality. In short, this is simply gorgeous Italian opera of the highest order. I cannot imagine any serious music lover not being captivated by the dynamism and electric atmosphere of this wonderful live performance. I give it my highest recommendation. So go ahead and plunge into what will be a great listening experience- guaranteed!" Report Abuse
