MOZART Piano Concertos Nos. 12 and 23 Marianna Shirinyan (pn); Scot Yoo, cond; Odense SO BRIDGE 9408 (52:10)

The mature Mozart piano concertos are, for me, the eternal apex of the format. From the Concerto No. 9 to the glorious final 27th, no two movements are quite alike. It is a body of work that dizzies the imagination for its emotional and theatrical range, not to mention the unmatched brilliance of the technical construction of the scores. It is in that spirit, it seems to me, that the delightful Read more Danish-Armenian pianist Marianna Shirinyan approaches this music, and she is matched in her manner by the lovely, if unspectacular, playing of this excellent Danish ensemble. I use the word unspectacular in a pointed way; all of the musicians on board here play with fine tone, comfortable tempos, and sure technique. They bring all of their talent to an accurate and respectful reading of the score, completely side-stepping their egos to allow Mozart to shine. There is no mooning over the famously melancholy Adagio in No. 23, nor is there an emphasis on the exuberance of that concerto’s finale. The only personality on display here is that of Mozart himself, a statement you cannot always make about some very famous performers of this music, including Vladimir Horowitz, Murray Perahia, and Arthur Rubinstein, all pianists I deeply admire for other reasons. For this basic reason, I found myself much more involved in listening to the music itself, as opposed to the performance. This is a subtle distinction, but in the case of Mozart, perhaps uniquely so, a critical one.
