Notes and Editorial Reviews

Those who equate Debussy's piano music with hazy ambience and rudderless rhythm will find these live recordings from July 2003 decidedly "unimpressionistic". To be sure, pianist Georges Pludermacher's beautiful tone, wide dynamic range, and keen ear for nuance serves Debussy's atmospheric keyboard writing and unique harmonic language as well as the best Debussy players on disc. At the same time, his forward sweep and strong linear underpinnings put welcome flesh on the music's bones, particularly in lyrical, introspective selections like Des pas sur la neige, La fille aux cheveux de lin, Feuilles mortes, and La Terrasse des audiences du Claire de lune.

Similar comments hold true for Pludermacher's Etudes.
Read more While the close microphone placement sometimes makes loud climaxes sound strident, the overall impact is superior to the less detailed sonics of Pludermacher's earlier Etudes traversal on the Lyrinx label (now out of print). In contrast to the jewel-like refinement and suppleness characterizing Mitsuko Uchida's reference studio recordings of the Etudes, Pludermacher is a big-picture guy, whose spontaneous turns of phrase and accent convey a communicative immediacy that belies the music's abstract reputation. As a result, the underlying humor in Pour les Degrés chromatiques acquires a welcome sardonic edge, and the double-note etudes cascade with more intensity than usual. L'Isle Joyeuse makes for a dazzling, upbeat encore to this highly recommendable release.
