Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a re-release of a disc first made available in 1999. It shows Mackerras in top form, bringing all of his skill to bear without apparent effort on these seemingly simple dances. Dynamics, accenting, and tempo have seldom been lavished on these miniatures with so much care, nor the melodic line and rich orchestration so lovingly delineated. Even those dances that are most notable for blunt vigor?the first and especially the seventh from the second set?reveal a range of arresting tonal colors and an exhilarating verve that pushes aside all before them. When finesse is required, however, as in the figurations of the first set?s sixth dance, it is etched with the Read more kind of graceful articulation one expects from a Haydn symphony. The Czech Philharmonic plays with élan and beautiful tone, much as you?d expect. If you don?t own a copy of the Slavonic Dances , here?s the one to get. And if you do own it already, why not buy a second copy, and give it to a friend?
