Following on the heels of Joop Celis’s marvelous set of the complete piano music of York Bowen (Chandos 10774) is this equally fine single disc of the preludes, berceuse, “Suite Mignonne” and the barcarolle from the Piano Suite No. 2 by

Cristina Ortiz. She, like Celis, has the full measure of Bowen’s style down pat; she is an outstanding musician and evidently enjoys playing his pieces. Ortiz is perhaps a shade more atmospheric at times, for instance in the Third Prelude (
Andante grazioso
), but the difference is like splitting hairs. Both are excellent, and both convey the music eloquently.
The question then comes to whether or not you should acquire this disc. If you don’t have or can’t afford the Celis set, most certainly you should. Ortiz does herself proud with these fine readings, but if you already went out and got the Celis set, the only reason to add this disc would be for some very slight differences of interpretation and (to my ears, anyway) clearer and crisper sound. The choice is yours.
