Worthwhile Recording June 7, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "The career of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) extended from the Baroque period into what we traditionally call music's Classical Era, namely the latter half of the 18th century. In considering the works of CPE Bach, then, it would appear logical to expect certain Baroque-era influences to be embedded in many of his compositions, and I think that is what happens here. Three quartets from the last year of CPE Bach's life (for strings and flute), plus an earlier duet and a trio sonata, all seem to carry these characteristics, at least to my ear. On this very nice Brilliant Classics recording, the Helianthus Ensemble presents CPE Bach in what strike me as period instrument sound, appropriate given the time frame of these compositions. My first listen to this CD led to this general assessment: although CPE Bach's chamber music in no way approaches the level of Haydn or Mozart, nevertheless it is of substantial merit and should hold interest. The Helianthus Ensemble (Italian) is a top notch group, and Brilliant Classics' impeccable sound justifies the label's very name. This recording is definitely worth a listen and in my view is very close to a 5 star rating." Report Abuse
