Notes and Editorial Reviews

The fascinating series from Accord of the complete works of Witold Lutoslawski continues in Volume 5, with the composer's earliest published work, the "Lacrimosa," composed before World War II, and written for his graduation diploma. This is followed by the early "Symphonic Variations," with colorful orchestration reminiscent of Stravinsky's "Firebird." The "Silesian Triptych" and the thoroughly Polish and folk-like "Little Suite" reflect the postwar years of 'socialist realism' and are nevertheless, enjoyable, melodious pieces, not far removed from the straight-forward, 'practical' aesthetics of American college composers of the 1950s and 60s. The centerpiece of the album is the Read more "Symphony No. 3," winner of the 1985 Grawemeyer Prize from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. The highly coveted award is noted for its altruistic large sum of money which allows composers financial security in order to devote themselves to large scale projects. Lutoslawski directed his prize toward setting up a scholarship fund in his native Poland. The work, one of his later scores, is dedicated to Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and makes use of the composer's "limited aleatorism" technique, wherein individual orchestral soloists play their notated phrases or repeated motives interpreted in their own way and time, rhythmically independent from one another. - Greg La Traille, ArkivMusic.com Read less
