A valuable compilation July 15, 2014 By J S E T. (West Grove, PA) See All My Reviews "Coming to thr recorded legacy of Sir Malcolm Sargent is much like coming to that of Otto Klemperer. These are men who knew their craft and their repertory. Surprisingly, things are not all stodgy. Tempi can in fact be brisk. The joy is in hearing all the inner workings of a piece. This collection gives us quite a broad spectrum of Sir Malcolm's oevre. Missing are the concerti recordings; great soloists loved working with him. The Gilbert and Sullivan operas, already issued several years ago, and a few items recorded for Decca such as Prokofiev's 1st symphony. What is here are the fine EMI recordings made over his lifetime. The famous Messiah and Elijah from the 40s, Gerontius and Belshazzar from the 50s, and a wide sampling of European and English classics from Beethoven, Schubert, and Smetana, to Holst and Vaughn Williams. Sargent was one of the great conductors of the 20th century and this set gives excellent witness to the style and breadth of his work." Report Abuse
