Notes and Editorial Reviews

The composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann, a friend of Günter Wand, described Bruckner's Fifth Symphony as Wand's personal 'Symphony of Fate'. Wand certainly had an affinity for the symbolic story line or musical life journey of this monumental work. In these performances, Wand and the orchestras he conducted bring forth the symbolic aspects inherent in Bruckner's score; the 'country bumkin' octave leaping tune opening the last movement, which Robert Simpson characterized as Bruckner's self-effacing theme within cosmopolitan Vienna, which then develops into a magnificent triple fugue. The eloquent as well as pensive aspects of the slow movement and the same music sped up in the charming yet strange scherzo. The cyclical structure, Read more contrapuntal details and overall richly bucolic nature of this natural music is also clearly heard in Wand's dramatic interpretation.

Günter Wand won the 1978 German Record Prize for his initial recording of this work. The Berlin Philharmonic recording on RCA, was reviewed within the Penguin Guide as ‘an experienced and selfless interpreter ... a noble reading, magnificently played.’

In the early 1980s Wand served as Principal Conductor of the NDR Symphony Orchestra, and guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He achieved much acclaim, particularly in his later years, having gained the recognition he deserved. It is very interesting to compare video releases of Wand's performances of this wonderful symphony with the different orchestras.
