What a great set this is! Sure the ORTF Orchestra is no Chicago Symphony, but after Martinon got chased away by Claudia Cassidy, the Bitch Queen of music critics, he had to make do with what he had, and France in the 1960s and ‘70s was no orchestral Mecca. But then, Martinon always has gotten short shrift. I vividly recall an incredibly stupid liner note by a Decca producer who made a few recordings with Martinon in the ‘50s, saying something like, “After he left Decca he seemed to have a sporadic career.” Sure, like he only went on to record the entire basic French repertoire for EMI and Erato, recordings that still stand as reference versions

Martinon was a composer, a very good one actually, and he brought a composer’s ear for detail and proportion to everything that he did. He’s sort of like Boulez in this respect, only with more warmth and a broader expressive range (he had a sense of humor, for instance). This gives the music an extra lift in the more boisterous bits of Rondes de printemps. Likewise, this La mer is one of the very best—elegant, shapely, but also really exciting; the Nocturnes are splendidly atmospheric, while the less familiar pieces (Khamma, for example, and even Jeux) will have you wondering why they aren’t better known. Admittedly the orchestra isn’t a great one, but Martinon whips it into more than adequate shape, and the sonics are better on the whole than EMI gave him for his equally splendid Ravel recordings. At Brilliant Classics’ super cheap price, this set is a steal.
