Notes and Editorial Reviews

HAYDN 16 Scottish Airs. Piano Trio in C , Hob. XV:27 Werner Güra (ten); Christoph Berner (fp); Julia Schröder (vn); Roel Dieltiens (vc) HARMONIA MUNDI 902144 (65:49)

Late in life, Haydn received several commissions to write settings for hundreds of English, Scottish, and Welsh folk songs, both real and ersatz (the term “folk music” is not historically accurate here, but I won’t open that can of worms). The results were extremely popular Read more and made money for their commissioners and for the composer. Haydn apparently found the work enjoyable as well as easy and profitable (he was no longer on Prince Esterházy’s full-time payroll), as he accepted a stream of such commissions. There is evidence that he farmed out some of the settings to pupils; we probably will never know which songs or which students. There were two basic situations: for some commissions, he (or a student?) simply set down a keyboard version of each melody; for others, he composed more sophisticated accompaniments, usually for piano trio.

These 16 songs are from the latter category. That and their innate quality strongly argue for Haydn’s authorship. They are developed into full-scale compositions, complete with preludes and postludes; they run an average of three minutes apiece. The texts include many Scottish classics, including four poems by Robert Burns. Most are tales of love, subtly erotic in a manner unknown to today’s pornographic culture.

Werner Güra needs little introduction; a well-known Lieder singer, he has also sung and recorded Bach with such historical performance masters as René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. His colleagues are equally accomplished. Their performances achieve a fine balance between the concert hall and the pub, fun and games, without sacrificing the quality of the music. The three movements of one of Haydn’s most beloved piano trios are scattered among the songs, the performance fresh and invigorating. The booklet spares us artist bios, using 32 glossy pages for texts in three-languages: Scots (with footnoted English equivalents), French, and German.

Brilliant Classics’ 150-CD Haydn Edition ( Fanfare 32:4) brought us 435 such songs. Engorged by the hundreds, they seemed trivial and repetitive; savored one by one, they become miniature masterpieces of their kind. The poems, the melodies, Haydn’s settings, and these performances are all too charming to resist.
