Notes and Editorial Reviews

DUM CLAMAREM • Nino Albarosa, dir; Mediae Aetatis Sodalicium • TACTUS 080001 (69:16 Text and Translation)

Nino Albarosa, a student of Dom Eugène Cardine, is one of the founders of the International Association for Gregorian Chant Studies (AISCGre) and currently president of the Italian section. He has recorded several fine chant discs with the present schola of women’s voices, the latest subtitled “sorrow and hope.” It was preceded by “Ancilla Domini,” focused on three early virgin saints, and “Petrus et Paulus,” focused on the two apostles. These chants have been selected to illustrate the twin themes of the subtitle, and 10 chants are arranged as two sets of Mass Propers, though they are miscellaneous selections, not
Read more integral sets in the liturgy. The chants are sung from the edition Graduale Novum, prepared by AISCGre scholars. Each offertory, Precatus est Moyses and Jubilate Deo universa terra, includes a verse. These rank with the more remarkable offertories, the former as one of the non-psalmic texts of special interest for the question of its origin, the latter for the notable melisma on the second occurrence of “jubilate.” In each case the verse is ably sung by a soloist.

The program opens with a remarkable chant, the hymn of the three young men in the fiery furnace in the Book of Daniel, formerly placed after the reading on the Ember Saturdays (no longer observed since 1970) and still found as an alternative to the gradual on the feast of the Holy Trinity, where it is appropriate to the theme of divine praise. The 12 verses are seldom recorded complete as they are here (I have only six other such recordings), an unfortunate fact shared with several other important but lengthy chants, so this is an important contribution. The program concludes with the four final antiphons sung every day at Compline. Each antiphon is sung in the simple tone followed by the solemn tone, a sequence not usually found on records, but the more ornate chant builds to a nice climax each time.

The choir has 11 singers whose voices blend as one. There is nothing affected about the singing, simply a straightforward interpretation of the chants. The disc is dedicated to Albarosa’s wife, who worked with him from the beginning of AISCGre. It is a worthy tribute.
