Notes and Editorial Reviews

Mandolinists Joe Brent and Alon Sariel present 22 of Dowland’s famous lute pieces in their own versions for two mandolins. Recorded at Vinegar Hill Sound in August 2012.A complete look at the work of John Dowland will discover that Dowland used some of his melodies in pieces for variable settings and instrumentations. For instance the song “Can She Excuse” is found in four different versions: as lute solo (2 versions), lute song, four-voice madrigal with lute ad.lib., and five-voice viol consort with lute. This creative practice is revived on this recording. The artists are playing the pieces on their instruments in different duo settings, following an arrangement manner of the late Renaissance that brings Dowland’s manuscripts back to Read more life. In the following recording, the pieces can be heard on mandolin and lute, two mandolins, as well as a ten string mandolin and a mandola. Next to the Renaissance lute as the historical instrument, the mandolin can be seen as a modern version of the descant lute.
