Notes and Editorial Reviews

TELEMANN Fantasies and Partitas Hansjörg Schellenberger (ob, oba, rec); Margit-Anna Süss (hp); Josef Radauer (cb) CAMPANELLA 130182 (2 CDs: 115:44)

Hansjörg Schellenberger and Heinz Holliger have a lot in common, quite apart from the fact that both are prominently positioned well above the waterline on that metaphorical iceberg that constitutes the global mass of men and women whose craft and art involves blowing through two conjoined slivers of reed into a two-foot-long conical wooden tube, Read more thereby creating all manner of confounding and/or (in their cases) beguiling sonic sensations. Both moved from prominent orchestral posts to solo careers, recorded prodigiously, expanded listeners’ consciousness, and, having achieved senior status, found a new focus in conducting. Neither has questioned the propriety of playing old music on new instruments. And both married harpists! Like Heinz and Ursula Holliger, Hansjörg Schellenberger and Margit-Anna Süss are partners off stage, on-stage, and in recording studios. Süss joins Schellenberger in the present recording, providing (along with bassist Josef Radauer) the continuo for the Six Partitas for a Melody Instrument of Telemann’s Kleine Kammermusik . The partitas are similarly constructed: a slow introduction followed by a set of dance-like “arias.” The Brandenburg Concertos they are not, of course, but they are pleasant listening, Telemann probably had the oboe in mind when he wrote the Partitas, but Schellenberger leavens the loaf by playing some movements on an oboe d’amore and others on a recorder. (Would Holliger do that?) It’s hard to imagine that Telemann would not have been delighted with the way Schellenberger, Süss, and Radauer have brought his partitas to life. It’s equally hard to imagine that Telemann’s present day admirers would not be similarly entertained by these suave performances.

The 12 Fantasies were composed for traverse flute “without bass.” Schellenberger, with ample precedent, plays them on the oboe and does so with his characteristic assurance, revealing their surprisingly varied moods and aspects. Although the Fantasies may have been conceived as an entity, listeners may want to sample them in measured doses. As readers of this journal well know, I am a confirmed oboephile, but nearly an hour of unadorned oboeing is a bit much, even for me, and may well present a comparable challenge to others—performers included. As for Schellenberger, I assume that he took breaks during the recording session. In any case, he meets the challenge. Telemann, I’m sure, would have approved, and so do I. I can’t promise, however, that I’ll be spinning this disc on a regular basis.

So, partitas—a delicious confection; fantasies—spinach. Come to think of it, I like spinach.
