Notes and Editorial Reviews

Prokofiev's disturbingly enigmatic opera, The Fiery Angel, was never performed in his lifetime - considered too decadent by Stalin and his successors - but David Freeman's imaginative production asserts it as one of the composer's greatest masterpieces. Ostensibly, it is a tale of religious hysteria and demonic possession, but the novel, by the Russian decadent Valéry Bryusov, from which the opera is derived, also explores symbolically the love triangle endured by the writer himself, inspired by the self-destructive figure of his lover, the poet Nina Petrovskaya. David Freeman has completely entered into this opera's strangely unnerving world. Evil is all around us and in his sensational production the image is taken quite literally. Read more

A Rare Oddity July 11, 2014 By   (Asheville, NC) See All My Reviews "I once read that Prokofiev is the most frequently performed 20th Century composer. Yet more than anything he wanted to be known for his operas which are very rarely presented. So this DVD of the Fiery Angel, one of his more obscure operas, by Valery Gergiev and the top-notch Mariinsky players is a rare treat indeed, probably the only way most people will ever see this piece. And boy, is it worth seeing. This over-the-top, hallucinogenic tale of sexual repression and religious hysteria in 16th Century Germany is in a class by itself. The final scene: the haunted Renata's failed exorcism among the writhing demon-possessed nuns, is one wild melange of music, choreography and stunning visual imagery. And there’s nekkid wimmin too!"
