These two discs present the complete vocal works of Joan Baptista Cabanilles (1644–1712), who at the age of 21 became organist at the Valencia cathedral, where he remained for the rest of his life. Understandably, his organ works far outnumber his vocal music, which has now been published in a critical edition. I can’t find any of the vocal works on records, and not many full discs of anything. Montserrat Torrent (on a Schwann LP) and John Butt (on CD) devoted whole programs to his organ music, and Jordi Savall’s first release on his new Alia Vox label was a program of instrumental performances of these works. I have the disc, although the review was written by Tom Moore (23:4), who raised the question of consort performances of organ works (and the lack of compositions written specifically for consort at the time). Incidentally, Juan (in that review) is the Spanish form of his Catalan name.

The Latin works are a psalm, a Mass, and a canticle. The seven vernacular pieces, all on the second disc except the first one, are devotions for the Blessed Sacrament, three of them much longer than the other four. Among the Latin settings, Beatus vir is a remarkable piece for a 12-voice choir (here “chamber choir” seems to mean one voice to a part), but it sounds less liturgical in mood than psalms that Monteverdi wrote for similar forces decades earlier. The Mass for six voices lacks an Agnus Dei, but the setting of the texts is sensitive and the instruments are less dominant than in the psalm. The Magnificat is described in the notes as “incomplete, lacking the first page so that the first lines are missing, the text instead starting with the words ‘Deposuit potentes’.” Actually, that line occurs halfway through the canticle, so I’m curious that half of the total 12-voice composition would have fit on one page. The missing portion is sung to a chant tone (mode 4 E). Like the psalm, it is also set for 12 voices, if a bit more restrained. The vernacular pieces are all structured as refrain with verses, though they are characterized variously as villancico or tone (one is called a duet).

Chenoll is the editor and publisher of the critical edition. His chamber choir, accompanied by organ, continuo instruments, cornetts, and sackbut, is new to records, and the price for two discs is modest. Unfortunately, the texts are printed without translation, which is more of a problem with the unfamiliar vernacular works than the well-known Latin texts. The singing and playing are delicate, the interpretations are as convincing as can be discerned from unfamiliar works of an obscure composer. I would have liked more than one page of notes, since the editor must have had much more to share about his research. Specialists will find this fine production of an unknown body of work irresistible.
