Notes and Editorial Reviews

Paganini For Two
This is a great pasta-eating recording!” says Gil Shaham. “It’s full of beautiful Italian melodies. You can sense Paganini’s operatic ambitions throughout. I think that he saw the violin as a singing instrument and that this is why his music for violin has an almost operatic quality. Paganini’s concertos with their long recitatives are certainly operatic, and these sonatas are also songlike. Go?ran So?llscher and I took all the Paganini music we could find, most of it already scored for violin and guitar, and discovered some really beautiful duos. The violin and guitar produce a very special sound when played together.” Particularly when played by artists of this calibre, one hastens to add. Reviewing the original
Read more release, The Strad praised Shaham’s natural temperament for Paganini: “The result is a brilliant and exciting set of performances with all the hallmarks of a world-class Paganinian – a round, rich cantabile and a technique that remains subordinate and never interrupts the musical line and flow . . . Guitarist Go?ran So?llscher is unsurpassed. His vibrant and golden sound – which both accompanies and takes over occasionally from the violinist – imparts an ideal background.”

Schubert For Two
Schubert for Two” – the title evokes Biedermeier Vienna’s Romantic charm and pleasures. This is music conceived for a private salon and its young composer’s appreciative circle of friends. “Shaham and So?llscher prove ideal partners,” wrote Gramophone of this recording’s original release. “Everything is finely nuanced and textured.” For these two artists, “Schubert’s is the most human, honest music – it’s never artificial in any way. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t need so many notes. The 15 Dances from D 365 look easy at first sight, but there is another, deeper level. You have all these different colours, then they shift a little bit and suddenly a darkness comes into this small piece in the major mode. It’s like opening a door into another world. In Schubert’s time they didn’t hesitate to make arrangements if they found a piece they thought was beautiful. We’re doing the same thing. We follow our intuition and ask ourselves: ‘Is this good? Does it work for our instruments?’ Schubert played the guitar himself and many of his songs were published with guitar. His publisher issued the 15 German Dances for flute or violin and guitar.”

Dvorak For Two
The brother and sister duo of Gil and Orli Shaham dates from childhood, when they would often play just for fun. Later they did some performing together in public. They’d given only about five or six concerts when Deutsche Grammophon’s producer heard them on the radio playing Dvora?k’s Sonatina (a piece he composed for another brother and sister duo, his own son and daughter, in 1893 while living in New York). That turned out to be the origin of this, their first recording together. The Sonatina, Orli remembers, “was the very first piece Gil and I discovered together. We immediately fell in love with it.” Their album – which also features the Brahmsian F major Violin Sonata of 1880 and the four delightful Romantic Pieces, fashioned by Dvora?k in 1887 for a neighbour and his teacher – was acclaimed as “a CD of simple delights as well as deep inspirations . . . The Shahams together prove conclusively what fabulous music this is with its constant parade of winsome melodies and infectious dance steps . . . Highly recommended” (Classic CD). Read less
